Understanding the HVAC Tax Credit

As temperatures rise across the country, nationwide providers of air conditioning, heating and plumbing, are reminding homeowners that there's no better time to take advantage of the U.S. government's HVAC tax credit.
As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which was originally set to expire on Dec. 31, 2010, homeowners who purchase an energy efficient HVAC system may receive a tax credit of up to 30 percent of the cost of the unit (installed). But before homeowners purchase a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit, there are some important facts to consider.

  • Only certain, approved units qualify for the HVAC tax credit.
  • To receive the air conditioning tax credit, homeowners must have the unit installed in their primary residence no later than Dec. 31, 2010.
  • Existing homes and new construction qualify. Secondary residences do not.

Details related to tax credits for energy efficient HVAC systems have undergone several revisions and consumers are advised to check EnergyStar.gov to ensure they select a unit that qualifies for the tax credit. Source:10ActionNews.com
